This template formats italic parenthesized text in a reader-customizable way. It should be used only for miscellaneous situations where a more specific template has not yet been created. For most situations, the following templates are preferred:

  • To provide a context for a definition, use {{context}} instead.
  • To indicate the accent for a pronunciation, use {{a}} instead.
  • To identify the sense to which a usage note, synonym, or other -onym applies, use {{sense}} instead.
  • To provide a qualifier before a list item (e.g. to qualify a synonym with a region or register), use {{qualifier}} instead.

Readers can customize the style of the parentheses displayed by this template. Your current style is this:

  1. A definition... (note..., your current style).

Most readers seem to prefer the parentheses around italic text not to be italicized when the surrounding sentence is not italic, e.g.:

  1. A definition... (note..., default style).

Some readers, however, prefer the parentheses around such text to be italicized:

  1. A definition... (note..., all italic).

This template allows readers to choose whether the parentheses should appear in italics using WT:PREFS or by editing your personal CSS file (e.g. Special:Mypage/monobook.css), as described in WT:CUSTOM.
